PARIS -- Milos Raonic hopes his recent success on clay leads to a long run at the French Open. The Canadian star won his opening match at the second Grand Slam of the year on Sunday, beating Australian wildcard Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to reach the second round. Raonic, the eighth seed from Thornhill, Ont., needed exactly two hours to advance against one of the games rising young stars. He also beat an Australian opponent for the first time at a Grand Slam after losing to Carsten Ball at the 2010 U.S. Open and Lleyton Hewitt at the 2012 Australian Open. He won on his third match point, sealing victory with a 27th ace. Raonic, who came to Roland Garros from a Rome semifinal last weekend, finished with 50 winners and 30 unforced errors, breaking on four of ten chances. "I felt very good, I was able to do the things I wanted to do," said Raonic, who next plays one of two Czechs, Lukas Rosol of Jiri Vesely. "In the first round you go in not knowing exactly how things are going to play out. When it mattered, I was able to put forward the right attitude and the right level of tennis. Im happy with that." Raonic has a career record of 32-23 on clay courts, compared to 100-42 on hard surfaces that dont deaden his powerful serve. But Raonic had two quarter-final appearances as well as the Rome semifinal in four clay-court tournaments leading up to the French Open. Hes trying to go beyond the third round at Roland Garros for the first time in his career. Later Sunday, sixth seed Tomas Berdych beat Canadian qualifier Peter Polansky of Thornhill 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Polansky, ranked 137th and playing in only his sixth career singles main draw at a major, last played a Grand Slam at the 2010 US Open. He was successful on only one of six break points while committing 21 unforced errors with 15 winners. "Its good to be back in the main draw of a slam," said Polansky. "I played well and enjoyed it. I was hoping to get a better draw, there are a lot of guys I could have beaten today. "I played well, I just came up a it short. But I take a lot of positives out of the last few weeks. Maybe I have more belief in my game now that Im older." Raonic said that despite heavy conditions in wet Paris, the courts held up well compared to Rome. "Theyre quite similar, though here they can change a little bit more due to the cloud coverage and not really that much sun the last few days," he said. "The ball wasnt bouncing as much as it had actually the last days on the outside courts. The 23-year-old Raonic used his experience against the young Australian, reducing Kyrgios to racket-hurling frustration after breaking immediately after losing serve in the second set. Raonic began the third set with a break for 2-0, lost it, but again gained the lead 4-2 on his way to victory. Raonic said that he was having trouble at times on serve, but managed to fight through the problem. "I was getting it together when it mattered, and thats all I can really ask," he said. "There was some moments where I was losing a little bit of concentration on my level, and I was able to put it together when I was in the important moments." After answering on-court questions in French, Raonic then said he would tweet a message in the language later. He said he would have the tweet proofed by an expert speaker before broadcasting it to his 143,000 followers. Calgary Flames Jerseys . - Buffalo Bills running back C. Miikka Kiprusoff Jersey . SEATTLE -- Brad Miller thought the ball would stay inside the foul pole. His manager wasnt so sure. Miller came up with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning Saturday and drove Jarrod Parkers 2-1 pitch high down the right-field line. The ball stayed fair for the rookies first grand slam. "It kept curving, but I was hoping," Miller said. "That felt good." The slam was the second of two home runs Miller hit against Oakland, and it gave Seattle a six-run lead. The Athletics mounted a comeback but the Mariners held on for a 7-5 win. "I wasnt sure if that ball was going to stay fair, but Im glad for us it did," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "It was obviously big for us, especially the way they came back." Boston clinched home-field advantage throughout the post-season with Oaklands loss. The AL West champion As will play their playoff opener at home next Friday against AL Central champion Detroit, and AL East winner Boston will start at Fenway Park against the team emerging from the wild-card playoff: Cleveland, Tampa Bay or Texas. The Athletics got a boost when Oaklands Brandon Moss and Alberto Callaspo hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning off Chance Ruffin. Mosss two-run drive was his team-leading 30th. Oaklands comeback try was hurt by many missed chances. The As failed to score after loading the bases with two outs in the sixth and eighth innings, and they were 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position. However, it was clear after the game the Athletics were already turning their thoughts toward the upcoming series against the Tigers, who beat Oakland 3-2 in last years division series. "It was a good matchup last year. Weve had some spirited games with them this year, so it should be an exciting series," As manager Bob Melvin said. "Two pretty well-matched teams, a little different in style. You look at the numbers overall, their pitching numbers and their hitting numbers, and ours and what we do and its a little different, but should be pretty evenly matched." Parker (12-8) gave up seven runs and sevven hits -- including three homers -- in 4 1-3 innings.ddddddddddddIt was the second time in three starts he allowed seven or more runs without making it through the fifth inning. "I think he was just a little off on the baseball today, but the stuff was still good," Melvin said. "Im not worried about that." Justin Smoaks career-best 20th homer, a two-run drive, put Seattle ahead in the second. Smoak became the fourth Mariner this season with 20 homers, the first Mariners quartet since 2007. Miller hit his first homer of the game with a solo shot in the third for a 3-1 lead. Two innings later, the Mariners had three straight singles to lead off the inning and Miller extended the lead with his grand slam. It was the third time this season Miller has hit two homers in a game, with the bulk of his eight homers coming in pairs. The grand slam was Seattles seventh this year, second in the majors behind Bostons nine. Brandon Maurer (5-8) gave up two runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings. He had been 0-1 in three starts and three relief appearances since beating the As on Aug. 20. "I got to throw everything together this last one, work on mound presence and really go out there and trust my stuff," Maurer said. NOTES: Seattle manager Eric Wedge said Saturday his uncertain contract status wasnt the reason he decided not to return next season. "If theyd offered me a 5-year contract, Im not coming back here," he said. Instead, Wedge said the reason behind his departure was a difference of opinion between him and the Mariners front office: CEO Howard Lincoln, president Chuck Armstrong and GM Jack Zduriencik. "My vision of the future and theirs are just different," Wedge said. ... Oakland OF Yoenis Cespedes was out of the lineup a day after leaving in the fourth inning with shoulder stiffness.
