DENVER -- Troy Tulowitzki showed why he is an All-Star and the NL captain for the Home Run Derby next week. More importantly, he is trying to show his young teammates the Colorado are still post-season contenders. He hopes winning a series at home was a fresh start. Tulowitzki hit two of Colorados five home runs, and the Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 6-3 on Wednesday. Drew Stubbs, Charlie Blackmon and Wilin Rosario also went deep for the Rockies, who won a home series for the first time in nearly two months. "Im careful about saying when wins are must-wins or what games are must-wins, but all things considered we needed to win that series," manager Walt Weiss said. Colorado last won a home series taking two of three from San Diego in May. The Rockies managed to split a four-game set with Atlanta in June but lost five other series at Coors Field. They were swept twice and in the process went from second in the NL West to last before taking two straight from the Padres. "A series win is important, especially against a division opponent," Tulowitzki said. Tulowitzki has expressed frustration with Colorados extended slump but hasnt given up on the season. He pointed out the Rockies used big turnarounds after the All-Star break to reach the World Series in 2007 and the playoffs again two years later. "Thats something Im trying to preach to these guys. Anything can happen," Tulowitzki said. "Even though it doesnt look like were in it keep coming to work every single day and hopefully it transfers over. Its been a rough first half but second halves here, those playoff-run years have been pretty good." They took a step with back-to-back homers off reliever Joaquin Benoit (3-1) in the eighth. Blackmon started the rally with a single and Stubbs followed with his ninth homer of the season and fifth in his last five games. Tulowitzki then hit an 0-1 fastball into the left field seats for his 20th home run of the year. It was Tulowitzkis second multihomer game this season and 10th of his career. Benoit had not allowed a run in 19 1-3 innings before Stubbs homer. "Benoit has been outstanding," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He got two strikeouts and a popout to centre and they hit a couple of high flies that went out. One by an All-Star." Boone Logan (2-1) pitched the eighth for the win and LaTroy Hawkins worked the ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances. Jake Goebbert and Seth Smith homered for San Diego. The Padres have not won a series in Denver in two years. Rockies starter Jair Jurrjens didnt experience any of the breathing trouble he suffered from during his Rockies debut last Friday but he was only able to last 4 2-3 innings. He left after the Padres tied the game 3-3 on Smiths solo home run and a wild pitch that scored Chris Denorfia. It was the only run in the game not scored on a homer. "We outhit them but they outhomered us and that was the difference," Black said. Jurrjens gave up eight hits and struck out six before leaving, but it could have been worse. With two runners on in the fifth Yasmani Grandal hit a foul home run down the right-field line, a call that was held up under review. It was the second time in the game Grandal was on the losing end of a review. "I thought it was fair. From my point of view it left the ballpark fair but it was so high that by the time it came down it just went straight out," Grandal said. "It got into the wind stream and blew the other way." Colorados All-Stars got things started in the first off starter Eric Stults. Blackmon hit his fourth leadoff home run of the game and second homer in as many days into the Rockies bullpen. One out later Tulowitzki hit a line drive into the bleachers in left to give Colorado a 2-0 lead. "You can only keep a talent like Tulo down for so long," Weiss said. "Hutchinson was again pretty good," Cormier said. "Knock on wood." Only superstition stopped Cormier from handing out more effusive praise. Hutchinson made 30 saves to record his second shutout of the playoffs as the IceCaps routed the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 5-0 on Wednesday in Game 3 of the American Hockey Leagues Eastern Conference final. The IceCaps lead the series 2-1. Game 4 will be played Thursday night in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. "We had a couple early power plays that sort of got us going," said winger Andrew Gordon, who had three assists. "Maybe they didnt execute quite to the level that theyre used to in this building, but we had a real good effort. Sometimes you get rewarded." Eric ODell had a goal and an assist. Jason Jaffray, Kael Mouillierat, Zach Redmond and Cormier all scored as well. Hutchinson raised his post-season record to 9-4 with a .945 save percentage. The IceCaps scored on consecutive shots less than two minutes apart in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Josh Morrissey, on his 19th birthday, took a cross-ice pass from Gordon in the right face-off dot and put a puck on the stick of Cormier in the slot for a re-direction goal on the power play at 11:24. Gordon intercepted a pass by Penguins winger Spencer MMachacek behind the net and fed Jaffray in front for a goal at 13:15.dddddddddddd "They outplayed us all over the ice," Penguins winger Tom Kostopoulos said. "They capitalized on their chances. They were clearly the better team." After killing a 65-second five-on-three Penguins power play late in the first period, the IceCaps forced another turnover on the forecheck early in the second, and ODell buried at loose puck at the left post to make the score 3-0. "If they score (on the five-on-three power play), youre like, Uh oh, its a game," Cormier said. "Kill that and I dont want to say weve got momentum, but we go into the second feeling good." Mouillerat scored from the goal-line on a five-on-three advantage at 6:24 and Redmond sent a slapshot on net from the blue-line that hit the glove of goalie Peter Mannino and trickled over the goal-line with a second left in the period to give the IceCaps a 5-0 edge going into the third. "I think there were a couple goals today that were backbreakers," Gordon said. "That one with a second left, that hurts. Ive been on the other end of those a few times and that hurts. Timely goals today were probably a momentum killer for them." Mannino, who played every minute of the Penguins first 13 playoff games, was pulled after stopping 19-of-24 shots in the first two periods. The Penguins are 0 for 13 on the power play in the series. Matt Murray stopped all eight shots he faced in relief. ' ' '
